  • The Heart Clinical Institute is one of Providence’s six specialized facilities focusing on a key service area.
  • The Institute ensures standardization and high-quality cardiac care across Providence hospitals.
  • Providence physicians at the Institute emphasize both prevention and treatment.

The new Clinical Institutes program at Providence Health ensures the highest standards of care for patients in key service areas. As one of the six institutes in the program, the Heart Institute, brings together experts in cardiovascular services from Providence organizations in seven states to provide a high-quality experience for patients with predictable costs and outcomes.

“We benefit patients because we have standards that we set,” says Susan Goldberg, executive director of the Heart Institute for the Southern California region. “Each hospital within the ministry strives to meet a variety of clinical measures that are often set by national standards. This ensures that patients receive excellent care before, during and after their procedures.”

According to Goldberg, the Heart Institute ensures that there is more consistency from hospital to hospital because healthcare teams are following the same standards. “There is also a consistency in cost because a larger network increases our buying power,” Goldberg says. “The consistency also improves training of staff members because nobody is surprised about a piece of equipment used for a patient.”

The Heart Institute also promotes a larger sense of community, purpose, and camaraderie.

“A hospital such as Providence Little Company of Mary Medical Center Torrance is not isolated, but has a broad opportunity to understand what best practices are in a larger context,” Goldberg says. “There is a greater opportunity for hospitals to provide access to clinical trials because of the hospital’s relationship to the larger Providence system.”

The overarching goals of the Heart Institute include a focus on wellness—educating patients on diet, exercise, smoking cessation and other preventive measures.

“We want to prevent disease in the community so people don’t become patients,” says Garry Olney, chief executive, Providence Little Company of Mary Medical Centers San Pedro and Torrance and chief executive leader of the Heart Institute. “But if they do, then we want to provide the highest level of care to make certain that they can return to a better lifestyle and a better quality of life.”
