Top award is among 42 received across Providence’s footprint, including 5 Top 25 accolades designated for the country’s highest-performing hospitals

RENTON, Wash. [June 3, 2026] - In a banner year for Providence’s environmental stewardship efforts, Providence has received a Greenhealth Top Health System Award by Practice Greenhealth, a leader in sustainable healthcare. The award — part of 42 Practice Greenhealth accolades received across 33 Providence hospitals — is Practice Greenhealth’s highest honor for health systems and an acknowledgement of Providence’s impact and leadership in environmental stewardship.

"We're incredibly grateful to receive such esteemed recognition by Practice Greenhealth,” said Beth Schenk, Providence chief environmental stewardship officer. “This award reflects the commitment of caregivers across our organization who make environmental stewardship an integral part of how we deliver on our vision of Health for a Better World.”

Highlights among Providence’s recognitions include:

  • Five Top 25 awards, provided to 25 of the country’s highest performing hospitals.
  • Five hospitals moved up to a higher award tier compared to 2025, with one achieving Top 25 status and four achieving a Greenhealth Leader recognition.
  • Eight Circle of Excellence awards, including five system awards in the categories of Chemicals, Climate, Leadership, Transportation and Waste.

These awards recognize Providence’s environmental stewardship efforts in 2025, which include reaching 100 sites operating on renewable electricity, a 27% reduction in carbon emissions across Providence hospitals, 57 sites completing LED retrofits and 90% of Providence hospitals deactivating wasteful piped delivery for nitrous oxide.

"Our environmental stewardship work has been key in helping Providence navigate a challenging time in healthcare,” said Ali Santore, chief external affairs officer, Providence. “We thank Practice Greenhealth for acknowledging that work and are proud to be national leaders of environmental stewardship in healthcare.”
