Providence's Accountable Care Organizations save Medicare $176 million in 2024 with continued value-based care delivery

September 3, 2025

RENTON, Wash. [Sept. 3, 2025] — Providence, one of the nation’s largest health systems, today announced that its Medicare Shared Savings Program (MSSP) Accountable Care Organizations (ACO) generated more than $176 million in savings to the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) in 2024.

This follows $148 million which Providence saved CMS in 2023.

“These results are exceptional and reflect the dedication and collaboration across the Providence Clinical Network and our 51 ministries (hospitals),” said Susan Huang, M.D., chief physician executive for Providence and chief executive for the Providence Clinical Network (PCN), which encompasses all of Providence’s ambulatory operations, clinical institutes, physician enterprise and population health.

“I want to extend my sincere congratulations to our Medicare programs and teams for making this achievement possible,” Dr. Huang said.

MSSP ACOs are groups of providers and care delivery organizations that collaborate to offer coordinated care to people with Medicare, with a goal of keeping beneficiaries healthier while avoiding medical errors and unnecessary services. The ACOs share in the savings they deliver to Medicare, which benefits both the ACO and CMS.

“In 11 years with our MSSP, we’ve saved CMS more than $621 million while providing the best care possible for our Medicare patients,” said Craig Enge, a vice president in the Population Health group at Providence. “This is significant not just for Medicare and our own finances, but more importantly for our patients. We’re finding the most cost-effective ways to get them the care they need to live their best lives.”

As of Performance Year 2024, Providence’s ACOs grew to serve 166,827 Medicare fee-for-service beneficiaries across its ministries in Alaska, California, Montana, New Mexico, Oregon, Texas and Washington, representing a 26% increase in two years. Since Providence and its affiliates began participating in the MSSP in 2014, its ACOs have steadily improved performance, generating savings for CMS each of the past nine years.

Patients consistently give Providence top ratings on provider communication and courteous and helpful office staff, illustrating a system-wide commitment to deliver excellent quality of care.
