Former chief medical officer of Providence South Division will lead the not-for-profit health system's ambulatory operations as the new chief executive, effective Feb. 26, 2024.
RENTON, WASH., Feb. 26, 2024 – Providence, a not-for-profit health system serving the Western U.S., announced Susan Huang, M.D., will serve as the organization’s new chief executive for the Providence Clinical Network (PCN). The PCN encompasses all of Providence’s ambulatory operations with over 10,000 providers, 30,000 caregivers and 1,000 clinics.
“Dr. Huang will lead the PCN and support Providence as we continue our journey to a more fully integrated care delivery system, scaling innovation and best practices to best serve our communities, clinicians and caregivers,” said Providence President and CEO Rod Hochman, M.D. “Under Dr. Huang’s leadership, I have no doubt the PCN will continue to excel in setting high standards and exploring new avenues for growth and excellence that are vital to our future.”
Dr. Huang is a health care innovator with extensive experience in physician leadership and patient advocacy, value-based care, health plan operations, strategic growth and operations. She was chosen for this role due to her expertise in helping organizations become the destination of choice for patients, clinicians and caregivers, as well as her passion for physician engagement and collaboration.

Dr. Huang most recently served as chief medical officer for Providence’s South Division, and chief executive officer of California’s payor-provider Providence Health Network, maximizing the efficiency of clinical operations, and improving patient engagement and quality and safety outcomes.
Prior to Providence, Dr. Huang led value-based care as chief value medical officer at the Palo Alto Foundation Medical Group of Palo Alto Medical Foundation in Sutter Health, defining vision, strategy and tactics for establishing the organization as a leader in high-value care and the provider of choice. An innovator, Dr. Huang helped develop one of the first successful AI models in health care at Google. With a background in research, she is a published scientific author in journals such as Nature.
Dr. Huang, a board-certified dermatologist, studied medicine at Harvard Medical School, completed her residency at Harvard Medical School hospitals including the Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Massachusetts General Hospital, where she was elected chief resident, and completed executive education at the Harvard Business School. She is a former teaching faculty member of Harvard Medical School and attending physician at the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, where she held physician leadership roles.
