Providence names Darryl A. Elmouchi, M.D., next chief operating officer

RENTON, Wash. [Nov. 19, 2024] – Providence, one of the nation’s leading health care systems serving seven western states with 51 hospitals, 1,100 physician clinics and 129,000 caregivers, announced today that Darryl A. Elmouchi, M.D., MBA, has been appointed its new chief operating officer, effective Jan. 2.   

With Providence’s current COO, Erik Wexler, stepping into the president and CEO role Jan. 1, Dr. Elmouchi will fill a key position bringing extensive clinical and operational experience  to his new role. 

Dr. Elmouchi currently serves as COO of Corewell Health, headquartered in Michigan. Corewell Health is comprised of 21 hospitals, multiple large employed medical groups, over 300 outpatient locations and a 1.3-million-member health plan. In his current role, he oversees strategy, operations, clinical care delivery and financial performance for Corewell Health’s entire clinical enterprise.

At Providence, Dr. Elmouchi will be responsible for overseeing operations, care delivery, and performance improvement initiatives across the health system. He will be charged with identifying opportunities that set new standards in delivering high quality equitable care, helping to sustain Providence’s Mission and support its vision of health for a better world.

Prior to his COO role at Corewell, Dr. Elmouchi served as president of Corewell Health West, a region of Corewell Health encompassing 10 hospitals, a 2,000+ provider medical group and a large continuing care enterprise. A practicing physician until 2020, his earlier leadership roles include chief medical officer of Spectrum Health, president of the Spectrum Health Medical Group and chair of the department of cardiovascular medicine at Spectrum Health.  

Dr. Elmouchi earned his medical degree from University of Michigan Medical School and holds an MBA from University of Michigan’s Ross School of Business. He holds a certificate in biostatistics from University of Michigan School of Public Health and earned his bachelor’s degree in history at University of California, Los Angeles. He completed his internship, residency and chief residency at University of California, San Francisco and fellowships in cardiac electrophysiology and cardiovascular medicine at University of Michigan Health System.
