Providence hospitals and affiliates named among top hospitals in Southern California

SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA (July 28, 2020) – Ten Providence Southern California hospitals and affiliated partners in Los Angeles and Orange counties earned recognition today from U.S. News & World Report, honors that included national and state rankings as top hospitals.

With approximately 415 acute care hospitals in California, the 10 hospitals were rated among California’s 45 best and named as Best Regional Hospitals.

Wexler, chief executive, Providence Southern California. “Best practices, developed through shared expertise, and focus on innovation, technology and caring for the whole person continuously result in raising our quality standards.”

In Los Angeles County, Providence Holy Cross Medical Center, Mission Hills, ranked No. 18 in California/No. 10 in the Los Angeles Metro Area; Providence Tarzana Medical Center, No. 27/16 (tie); Providence Saint John’s Health Center, Santa Monica, No. 31/18; Providence Little Company of Mary Medical Center Torrance, 37/20; and Providence Saint Joseph Medical Center, Burbank, 45/23.

These four hospitals also were recognized for high performance in a number of specialties, meaning they performed among the top 10 percent across the U.S. in specific areas:

Providence Holy Cross – High performing in gastroenterology and GI surgery, geriatrics, nephrology, neurology and neurosurgery, orthopedics, pulmonary and urology and for procedures and treatment for congestive heart failure, colon cancer surgery and COPD.

Providence Tarzana – High performing in geriatrics, nephrology, neurology and neurosurgery and pulmonary, and for procedures and treatment for congestive heart failure, colon cancer surgery and COPD.

Providence Saint John’s – High performing in in gastroenterology and GI surgery, orthopedics and pulmonology and for procedures and treatment of hip replacement, knee replacement and lung cancer.

Providence Little Company of Mary – High performing in nephrology and for procedures and treatment of congestive heart failure, colon cancer surgery, COPD and knee replacement.

Providence Saint Joseph – High performing in COPD, colon cancer surgery, heart Bypass surgery and heart failure.

In Orange County, Mission Hospital in Mission Viejo and Laguna Beach and affiliated partners Hoag Memorial Hospital in Newport Beach and Hoag Orthopedic were named National Best Specialty Hospitals. Hoag Memorial Hospital, Newport Beach, ranked No. 8 in California/No. 4 in the Los Angeles Metro Area; Mission Hospital, Mission Viejo/Laguna Beach, 15/8; St. Joseph Hospital, Orange, 20/12; and St. Jude Medical Center. Fullerton, 27/16 (tie for metro area.)

These three Providence hospitals in Orange County also were recognized for high performance in key specialties and in procedures:

Mission – Ranked No. 33 nationwide in diabetes and endocrinology. High performing in gastroenterology and GI surgery, geriatrics, nephrology, neurology and neurosurgery, orthopedics, pulmonology and urology, and in common procedures and treatments for congestive heart failure, colon cancer surgery, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD,) hip replacement, knee replacement and lung surgery.

St. Joseph – High performing in geriatrics, nephrology and pulmonology and for procedures and treatment for heart failure and heart bypass surgery, colon cancer and lung cancer surgery, COPD and knee replacement.

St. Jude – High performing in neurology and neurosurgery and pulmonology, as well as procedures and treatment for heart bypass surgery, congestive heart failure, colon cancer surgery, hip replacement and knee replacement.

U.S. News estimates that each year nearly 2 million people face the prospect of surgery or special care that poses either unusual technical challenges or significantly heightened risk of death or harm because of age, physical condition or existing conditions. These rankings are offered as a tool to help patients find sources of especially skilled inpatient care.

Hospitals’ performances in 16 specialties are compiled in part from the three most recent years of an annual reputational survey of specialized physicians are also factored in. Surveyed physicians are asked to name up to five hospitals they consider the best for difficult cases in their specialty.

Hospitals that are not nationally ranked but scored high enough in a specialty to put them in the top 10 percent of those hospitals that were analyzed are recognized as high performing. Hospitals that are nationally ranked in at least one of the 16 data-determined specialties, or that earned at least three ratings of high performing across the 16 specialties and nine procedures and conditions are designated as Best Regional Hospitals within their states, metropolitan areas or other regions.
