HealthBreak | Nutrition During Cancer Treatment

January 3, 2017

The Montana Cancer Center at St. Patrick Hospital in Missoula is a comprehensive cancer center, which includes nutritional counseling during cancer treatment. "Nutrition can really impact the outcome of cancer survivorship and cancer treatment," says Kirsten Godwin, RD CNSC - clinical nutrition manger at the Western Montana cancer center. "We look at the person as a whole, and not only treat the disease with medications, such as chemotherapy and radiation, but also look at the person and focus on how we can help you eat better, choose founds that sound good, make sure that you are sleeping at night." "If you sleep well and are not so stressed, you're going to eat better during the day and things tend to go more smoothly," Kirsten explains. At the Missoula cancer center, registered dietitians work with patients and talk about what foods work well, what can be changed or added into the diet to make sure they are eating good quality foods. "Our goal is to get patients through cancer treatment successfully," Kirsten says. "Nutrition is such a big part of that."
