Honored by Healthgrades, a Consumer Resource for Health Care

LOS ANGELES (Feb. 24, 2015) – Providence Saint John's Health Center was named today among the nation’s top 50 hospitals, the only California hospital and one of just 11 nationwide to receive the distinction every year since it was initiated in 2007.

The Healthgrades 2015 America’s 50 Best Hospitals Award was given to the top 1 percent of more than 4,500 hospitals nationwide for consistent, year-over-year superior clinical performance as measured by Healthgrades, a leading online resource for comprehensive information about physicians and hospitals.

“Saint John’s is a health care ‘gem’ in Santa Monica, and has managed to outperform highly regarded hospitals not only here on the Westside but across America,” said Marcel Loh, the hospital’s chief executive. “I am overwhelmed by the dedication of every physician, nurse, caregiver and volunteer who continuously strive to give the best to our patients and our community.”

Providence Tarzana Medical Center received the Healthgrades 2015 America’s 100 Best Hospitals Award placing the hospital among the top 2% nationwide for clinical excellence.

“Each and every one of our physicians, employees and volunteers shares this honor – they’re all caregivers in their own ways and work as a team to provide the best quality care for our community,” said Dale Surowitz, the hospital’s chief executive. “It’s gratifying to work among such dedicated, talented and caring people who go above and beyond very day.”

In compiling its Best Hospitals lists, Healthgrades analyzed data from 2011-13 to determine the highest performing hospitals. The 50 Best Hospitals had a 25 percent lower risk-adjusted mortality rate across 19 procedures and conditions where in-hospital mortality was the clinical outcome, compared to all other hospitals.

During this same period, if all other hospitals performed at the level of America’s 50 Best Hospitals Award recipients across these 19 procedures and conditions, 168,239 lives could potentially have been saved. For example, patients treated at a hospital that has achieved the America’s 50 Best Hospitals Award had, on average, a 26.6 percent lower risk of dying from heart failure than if treated at a hospital that did not receive the award.

Hospitals that achieved the 100 Best Hospitals Award collectively had a 26.4 percent lower risk adjusted mortality rate across the 19 procedures and conditions. If all other hospitals performed at the level of America’s 100 Best Hospitals Award recipients across these 19 procedures and conditions, 172,626 lives could potentially have been saved.
