Providence St. Luke’s Rehabilitation Medical Center welcomed the first six residents to the Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PM&R) residency program. This summer, Providence hosted a special white coat ceremony, to symbolize the residents transition into their chosen specialty.
This three-year residency program provides comprehensive, hands-on experience for physicians interested in becoming board-certified physiatrists -specializing in physical medicine and rehabilitation. The training program encompasses clinical, educational and research opportunities in all areas of PM&R, including spinal cord injury, stroke, brain injury, amputee care and pediatric rehabilitation.
“We are excited to welcome our new residents to the Providence family. As our first group of residents, we are thrilled for them to help define the culture of the residency program while also setting the bar for all future residents.” said Greg Carter M.D., chief medical officer for Providence St. Luke’s Rehabilitation Medical Center.
“With expert clinicians, award-winning teachers and research scientists, we believe our program will train and develop Physiatrists focused on whole-person care that will benefit our patients and communities.” said Ken Isaacs, M.D., regional medical director of Providence Spokane Neuroscience Institute.
The residency program offers six positions per year. Rotations will be based at Providence St. Luke’s Rehabilitation Medical Center, a 102-bed inpatient rehabilitation hospital, along with rotations at Providence Sacred Heart Medical Center and Holy Family hospitals, Sacred Heart Children’s Hospital and Providence St. Luke’s Outpatient Physiatry Clinic (other rotations to include hospitals and medical centers within the state). As the region’s largest, free-standing, Level I Trauma rehabilitation hospital, St. Luke’s provides comprehensive rehabilitation services throughout the region and Pacific Northwest.
