The American Society of Nephrology (ASN) is recognizing Providence Executive Director for Research for the Inland Northwest Katherine Tuttle, MD, FASN, FACP, FNKF, with a lifetime achievement award for her extraordinary contributions to kidney disease research and advancements across academic medicine.
Dr. Tuttle was named the 2023 John P. Peters Award honoree in late May. This is one of the most significant accolades for a nephrologist, a physician who specializes in care and treatment of kidney disease.
Dr. Tuttle’s collective work has fundamentally impacted treatment approaches to chronic kidney disease, shaping scientific discovery, clinical trials, and patient treatment across the world.
Dr. Tuttle’s primary research interests are in diabetes and chronic kidney disease. She has published more than 300 original peer-reviewed articles as a clinical and translational scientist.
In addition to her role at Providence, Dr. Tuttle serves as the Institute of Translational Health Sciences regional principal investigator and as a professor of medicine at the University of Washington School of Medicine. Dr. Tuttle oversees a regional network of 17 clinical research centers and is chair of the University of Washington Research Regional Executive Council.
Dr. Tuttle earned her medical degree and completed her residency in internal medicine at Northwestern University. She was a fellow in metabolism and endocrinology at Washington University. She completed her nephrology fellowship training at the University of Texas Health Science Center.
Dr. Tuttle is chair of the ASN Diabetic Kidney Disease Collaborative. She has chaired numerous other boards, working groups, and committees for additional organizations, including the National Institutes of Health, the American Society of Nephrology, the International Society of Nephrology, Kidney Disease Improving Global Outcomes, the National Kidney Foundation, and the American Diabetes Association.
Additional honors include the Medal of Excellence from the American Association of Kidney Patients, the National Kidney Foundation Garabed Eknoyan Award, the YWCA Spokane Woman of Achievement Award in Science, and two University of Washington Outstanding Clinical Faculty Awards.
Dr. Tuttle will accept the John P. Peters Lifetime Achievement Award during a ceremony in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania this November.
