Celebrating Native American Heritage Month

November is Native American Heritage Month, a time to recognize and honor the rich cultural practices of Indigenous Americans, including food, art, history, music and storytelling. Through exploration of these diverse traditions, we encourage celebrating the first inhabitants of this land and recognize their important contributions to our nation's history.

The contributions of Native Americans are integral to the fabric of our society. This November, and throughout every month, it is vital to celebrate the unique heritage and ongoing contributions of Native Americans, as well as acknowledge the historical and contemporary challenges these communities face.

Historical insight

On Dec. 14, 1915, Red Fox James, a Blackfoot Indian, arrived at the White House on horseback after visiting 24 states to campaign for a day to honor Native Americans. Throughout his life, he was an advocate for Native American rights, notably through his association with the Society of American Indians, founding the first Boy Scout troop for Native Americans, and supporting women's suffrage.

In 1916, New York established the first American Indian Day. In 1976, President Gerald Ford designated October 10-16 as Native American Awareness Week. Expanding on these, President George H.W. Bush signed a resolution in 1990 declaring November as Native American Indian Month, urging all levels of government and organizations to celebrate Native American contributions worldwide.

Ways to celebrate and support

We value the diversity of our community and take pride in honoring our Native American patients and caregivers during this month. Wishing you all a happy Native American Heritage Month!
