May 15, 2023 Providence News Team

Visitation of Family and Friends

At Providence, our priority is to protect the health and safety of all who enter our facilities and to promote holistic patient centered care while maintaining a safe environment for patients, visitors, and healthcare providers. The presence of family and friends is important to the healing process and they are encouraged to provide support during hospitalization.

Each patient (or support person, where appropriate) shall be informed of his or her visitation rights, including any clinical restrictions or limitations on such rights, in advance of furnishing patient care whenever possible.

Each patient (or support person, where appropriate) shall be informed of the right, subject to his or her consent, to receive visitors whom he or she designates, including, but not limited to, a spouse, a domestic partner (including a same-sex domestic partner), another family member, or a friend and his or her right to withdraw or deny such consent at any time.

The hospital shall not restrict, limit or otherwise deny visitation privileges on the basis of race, color, national origin, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, or disability.

The hospital shall ensure that all visitors enjoy full and equal visitation privileges consistent with patient preferences.

A.    General Policy

1.    Visiting is encouraged in a safe and quiet manner considerate of all patients, other visitors, and health care providers.

2.    Visiting will be consistent with patient confidentiality and other Patient's Rights and Responsibilities policies.

3.    Visitors must not interfere with the rest and comfort of the patient or of other patients when they are visiting.  Hospital staff is expected to intervene if visitors interfere with the therapeutic environment of any patient.

4.    The right of the patient to have visitors may be limited or restricted when visitation would interfere with the care of the patient and/or care of other patients.

5.    Visitors may be asked to wait until the patient is ready to receive visitors and are expected to cooperate if the patient refuses or desires to limit visitors.

6.    When a patient is incapacitated or otherwise unable to communicate his or her wishes and an individual provides an advance directive designating an individual as the patient’s support person (it is not necessary for the document to use this exact term), the hospital must accept this designation, provide the required notice of the patient’s visitation rights, and allow the individual to exercise this patient’s visitation rights on the patient’s behalf.

7.    When a patient is incapacitated or otherwise unable to communicate his or her wishes, there is no advance directive designating a representative on file, and no one has presented an advance directive designating himself or herself as the patient’s representative, but an individual asserts that he or she, as the patient’s spouse, domestic partner (including a same-sex domestic partner), parent or other family member, friend, or otherwise, is the patient’s support person, the hospital is expected to accept this assertion, without demanding supporting documentation, provide the required notice of the patient’s visitation rights, and allow the individual to exercise the patient’s visitation rights on the patient’s behalf. However, if more than one individual claim to be the patient’s support person, it would not be inappropriate for the hospital to ask each individual for documentation supporting his/her claim to be the patient’s support person.

8.    Visitors are encouraged to refrain from/limit:
•    Strong fragrances/perfumes
•    Flowers with strong fragrance
•    Balloons that contain latex

B.     Visiting Hours

1.    There is no restriction of visiting hours related to the care of the patient and/or the care of other patients; visitation restrictions may be enforced if:

•    There may be infection control issues and/or during flu season;
•    Visitation may interfere with the care of other patients;
•    The hospital is aware that there is an existing court order restricting contact;
•    Visitors engage in disruptive, threatening, or violent behavior of any kind;
•    The patient or patient's roommate(s) need rest or privacy;
•    The patient is undergoing care interventions.

2.    Visitor participation in patient care:
•    A member of the patient's support community may request, or be requested by patient or staff, to stay with the patient. Appropriate arrangements will be made for an overnight stay whenever possible;
•    Minor children are welcome but must be supervised by an adult, other than the patient, at all times;
•    Minor children are not permitted to stay overnight;
•    Families and friends may assist with meals, feedings, personal care and grooming after discussion with the patient's nurse regarding plan of care;
•    Visitors are not allowed to give medications to patients;
•    Visitors must comply with all Infection Prevention and Control policies that are part of the patient's plan of care.

C.     Specialty Care Units

1.    ICU - Visitors are generally limited to two support people at one time. At St. Joseph Hospital, visitors must use the phone in the waiting area to check with nursing staff prior to entering the ICU. Children under the age of 13 may visit if prior approval is obtained from the Charge Nurse.

At Redwood Memorial Hospital, visitors will be asked to check in with nursing staff prior to entering the ICU.

2.    Emergency Department:
a.    Adults undergoing treatment in the ED are permitted one support person. The nurse or physician in charge of the patient may permit exceptions;
b.   Children undergoing treatment are permitted two support people at the bedside. The nurse or physician in charge of the patient may permit exceptions;
c.    Visitors may be asked to leave at any time, depending upon the condition of the patient, the nature of the medical/nursing intervention or the behavior of the visitor.

3.    Childbirth Center (CBC) - The CBC is a locked unit. Siblings are allowed to visit but visitation may be restricted during flu season. Patients and visitors must use the security intercom at the hallway entrance to the unit to be allowed entry. Staff will verify if the person to be seen is a patient at or staff from another unit before allowing entry.

4.    New Beginnings – Siblings are allowed to visit but visitation may be restricted during flu season. New Beginnings is a locked unit. Patients and visitors must use the security intercom at the hallway entrance to the unit to be allowed entry. Staff will verify if the person to be seen is a patient at New Beginnings or staff from another unit before allowing entry.

5.    Children allowed to visit must be accompanied by an adult and be properly supervised.

A.    Política general

•    Puede haber problemas de control de infecciones y/o durante la temporada de gripe;
•    Las visitas pueden interferir con el cuidado de otros pacientes;
•    El hospital sabe que existe una orden judicial que restringe el contacto;
•    Los visitantes tienen un comportamiento perturbador, amenazante o violento de cualquier tipo;
•    El paciente o los compañeros de habitación necesitan descanso o privacidad;
•    Un miembro de la comunidad de apoyo del paciente puede solicitar quedarse con el paciente, o esto puede ser solicitado por el paciente o el personal. Siempre que sea posible, se tomarán las medidas apropiadas para que pase la noche;
•    Los niños menores son bienvenidos, pero deben estar supervisados por un adulto, que no sea el paciente, en todo momento;
•    Los niños menores de edad no pueden pasar la noche;
•    Los familiares y amigos pueden ayudar con las comidas, la alimentación, el cuidado personal y el aseo después de hablar con la enfermera del paciente sobre el plan de cuidados;
•    No se permite que los visitantes den medicamentos a los pacientes;

2.    Departamento de Emergencias:
