Since launching in South Puget Sound last March, Walk with a Doc has become a powerful way to bring community members together through exercise, health education and personal connection. As the program continues to grow, additional provider participation will be key to expanding its impact.
The program was spearheaded by Providence Medical Group physician Dr. Rachel Ballou, who was inspired to create more opportunities for face-to-face interaction following the Covid-19 pandemic.
How you can participate
The success of Walk with a Doc depends on provider participation, and Dr. Ballou is inviting physicians, advanced practice providers and other clinicians to help shape the future of the program.
Volunteering is simple. Providers are asked to give a short, 5 to 10 minute talk on a health topic of their choice and then join participants for the walk. Recent presentations on seasonal mental health changes, hydration and vaccines have sparked thoughtful discussions, demonstrating the community's strong interest in learning directly from trusted healthcare experts.
Building connection beyond the clinic
This is a unique opportunity to step outside the clinical setting and connect with patients and community members in a more personal way. By sharing your knowledge, you can help improve health literacy, encourage healthy lifestyles and strengthen community connections.
Whether you're interested in presenting, walking or simply learning more about the program, your involvement can make a meaningful difference. Every provider who participates helps expand access to reliable health information and creates a more welcoming, supportive environment for our community.
Join an upcoming walk
Our next walk will take place Oct. 10 at Woodland Creek Community Park, with future walks occurring on the second Saturday of each month. Providers and their families are welcome to attend, even if they are not scheduled to present.
If you've been looking for a meaningful way to engage with the community, consider volunteering with Walk with a Doc. To get involved or sign up to give a future health talk, please contact Rachel Ballou.
Special thanks to the Providence Foundation for making this partnership possible and helping support the health and wellness of our community.
