Providence Little Company of Mary Transitional Care Center, a skilled nursing facility in Torrance, and Providence Little Company of Mary Sub-Acute Care Center, a skilled nursing facility in San Pedro, received two different but significant accolades.
The TCC earned five stars for the fifth straight year in last week’s U.S. News & World Report feature listing the nation’s top nursing homes.
The magazine’s prestigious rankings were based on U.S. Centers for Medicare & Medicaid surveys that rated the 115-bed transitional care center among the best care homes in the nation based overall rating of care, quality, health inspections, overall staffing and RN Staffing. As noted by a recent article in McKnight’s Long-Term Care News, for the first time this year, U.S. News is giving most facilities two ratings – one for the overall quality of the home, the other a new “short-stay rehab rating.” The TCC has earned high performance ratings in both domains.
Elva Sipin, executive director of post-acute services, credited the center’s more than 300 employees and physicians, as well as the connection to nearby Providence Little Company of Mary Medical Center Torrance, a 436-bed acute care hospital.
U.S. News evaluated over 15,000 nursing homes and rehabilitation centers nationwide and just 736 (4.7%) facilities scored as High Performing in both overall rating and short stay rehab.
In addition, the San Pedro sub-acute care center received a quality rating of 5 stars and overall rating of 4 stars from Nursing Home Compare.
CMS developed Nursing Home Compare and the star rating system to provide consumers with an easy way to search for nursing homes that provide the quality of care they desire. The 125-bed sub-acute care center’s rating was based on health and fire safety inspections, nurse staffing and quality of care.
“This achievement in less than a year, is a testament to the diligence, collaboration and hard work of our core leaders, physicians and caregivers,” Sipin said. “We’ve identified challenges and implemented process improvements that contributed to our immediate success.”
At both San Pedro and Torrance post-acute centers, employees and physicians, she said, engage
their patients, most of whom are elderly. The staff is composed of nurses, physical therapists, occupational therapists, speech therapists, respiratory therapists, dietitians and administrative support.
