Family Promise, a longtime community partner of Providence, is an organization that focuses on comprehensive solutions for housing families. Providence invested $150,000 in 2023 and helped Family Promise fund homelessness prevention, emergency housing and long-term stabilization services in Spokane.

Family Promise is unique because it provides emergency shelter and housing for families. Many shelters can place men or women, moms with their young girls or dads with young boys, but there aren’t local housing solutions that keep families together. Providence knows that homelessness is incredibly stressful for families, so Family Promise’s solution of keeping families together through a crisis is ideal.

Family Promise doesn’t just help families get into housing. It also prevents homelessness in the first place by working with families at risk of losing their housing. For families that need more support, the organization keeps in touch with those they’ve housed to help them navigate the often-difficult road of staying housed. Families who participate in the program are successful – in fact 95% remain stably housed after two years.

One shining example of Family Promise’s commitment to helping the whole family is when a staff member noticed a little boy living in the shelter, born blind, would have increased quality of life by receiving a walking cane. The staff member worked with other community partners and obtained a cane for the little boy.
