Half billion-dollar Providence Tarzana Reimagined project unanimously approved by L.A. City Council

With the Los Angeles City Council’s unanimous approval and Mayor Eric Garcetti’s written confirmation, Providence Tarzana Medical Center is poised to begin construction on its $542 million expansion and renovation project, slated for completion in 2022.

Mayor Garcetti signed an ordinance last week, providing final approval for Providence Tarzana Reimagined – construction and enhancement of a hospital designed to reflect the changing art and science of health care.

“I’m overwhelmed by the support we have received to build this new state-of-the-art hospital campus,” said Dale Surowitz, chief executive. “I want to thank the city, particularly Councilmember Bob Blumenfield, for sharing our vision and approving the project; the community, business and labor for their steadfast support; our employees for their commitment to exceptional care; and our partners who help Providence Tarzana deliver care both inside and outside our hospital walls.”

In 2008, Providence Health & Services acquired the hospital, built in 1973, and pledged to expand and enhance the tradition of excellent care. With advances in technology, changes in patient care philosophies and the development of procedures that allow for fewer days in the hospital – or even treatment as an outpatient – Providence Tarzana sought to design a hospital for the future.

With last week’s city approval, Providence Tarzana pledged to increase its commitment to the community’s homeless and those suffering mental health issues, working with partners to provide resources. As a not-for-profit health care system, Providence contributes hundreds of millions of dollars each year to programs for vulnerable populations.

“Providence Tarzana Medical Center has been a great partner in our community and this investment shows how committed they are to the health and well-being of the West Valley,” said Councilmember Blumenfield, whose district includes the hospital. “This redevelopment is essential so that Providence can continue to provide the highest quality of care for generations of Angelenos.”

Providence Tarzana Reimagined is the theme of the expansion and enhancement of the existing campus. Work is underway at the hospital to retrofit the existing patient building to further improve safety in a major earthquake. The expansion will include a state-of-the-art patient wing with private rooms, a new and expanded emergency department, the latest technology, a second parking structure and healing gardens.

Providence Tarzana has received Healthgrades’ America’s 100 Best Hospitals Awards for the past three years.
