Radiation oncology program recognized for meeting highest levels of quality, patient safety

ANCHORAGE, Alaska — The American College of Radiology (ACR) has once again awarded a three-year term of accreditation to the Providence Cancer Center for its radiation oncology program.

Radiation oncology (radiation therapy) is the careful use of high-energy radiation to treat cancer and a small number of noncancerous conditions. A radiation oncologist may use radiation to cure cancer or to relieve a cancer patient’s symptoms. The ACR gold seal of accreditation represents the highest level of quality and patient safety.

“The accreditation by the ACR for Providence Alaska Medical Center demonstrates continued excellence of care and dedication to the highest quality cancer care for our Alaskan patients,” said John Halligan, M.D., medical director of Radiation Oncology at the Providence Cancer Center. “This was also reflected in the summary statement of the ACR reviewing team which wrote ‘This is an excellent facility with state-of-the-art equipment. Well-organized with good attention to QA processes. The clinical notes are excellent and treatment plans are sound’.”

The ACR is the nation’s oldest and most widely accepted radiation oncology accrediting body, with over 30 years of accreditation experience. The ACR gold seal of accreditation is awarded only to facilities meeting specific requirements-based Practice Guidelines and Technical Standards developed by ACR after a peer-review evaluation by board-certified radiation oncologists and medical physicists who are experts in the field.

Patient care and treatment, patient safety, personnel qualifications, adequacy of facility equipment, quality control procedures, and quality assurance programs are assessed. The findings are reported back to the facility and provides the practice with a comprehensive report they can use for continuous practice improvement.
