Is Advance Care Planning Outdated, Misguided or Redeemable? A conversation with Center ethicists
Presenter: Robert Macauley, M.D., FAAP, FAAHPM, HEC-C Recorded: May 10, 2022 Series: Goldman-Berland Lectureship in Palliative Medicine Much has been written and debated about advance care planning in the last 30 years. And while the goal of advance care planning aims to allow individuals to make decisions about their future health care and lead to higher-quality care at the end-of-life, a significant body of recent scholarly research has found a lack of evidence that advance care planning was connected to influencing medical decision making at the end-of-life, producing goal-concordant care, or improving patients’ or families’ perceptions of the quality of care received. In this interactive dialogue, Dr. Macauley and ethicists at the Center will discuss the evolution of advance care planning, review recent criticisms about the paradigm, and suggest ways to make advance care planning more effective and relevant for patients and caregivers.
