Think it's just heartburn? Think again.

Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) affects an estimated 1 in 5 adults in the U.S. It initially presents with symptoms like heartburn, regurgitation or difficulty swallowing, but it can quietly progress into a chronic condition with serious health risks. Atypical symptoms, such as persistent cough, hoarseness and frequent throat clearing are sometimes subtle and frequently misdiagnosed, especially when they occur without the classic “burning” sensation of heartburn.

At Providence St. Jude’s Knott Family Endoscopy Center, we specialize in recognizing these early, often “silent” symptoms of GERD and providing precise, effective treatment before complications arise. Left untreated, GERD can lead to progressive esophageal inflammation, narrowing or stricture formation, and even Barrett’s esophagus, a precancerous condition that greatly increases the risk of esophageal cancer.

“Many patients don’t realize that GERD can present in ways that have nothing to do with heartburn,” explains Dr. Nikolai Bildzukewicz, Director of Foregut Surgery at Providence St. Jude. “We see people who’ve been treated for asthma or chronic cough for years, only to discover that reflux was the root cause all along.”

A Precision Approach to Diagnosis and Treatment

Using high-definition endoscopes, high-resolution esophageal motility testing and advanced pH monitoring, our expert team at the Knott Family Endoscopy Center can pinpoint the cause and severity of reflux. This allows us to tailor treatment, including lifestyle changes, medication and minimally invasive procedures that address the root issue.

The Future of GERD Care

A promising area of GERD research focuses on pepsin, a digestive enzyme that can damage the esophagus even without acid. At Providence St. Jude, we’re exploring therapies that neutralize pepsin, offering new options for patients unresponsive to acid-suppressing medication.

“We want people to know that they don’t have to live with the discomfort of GERD,” says Dr. Bildzukewicz. “There are more options than ever before, and we’re here to help patients find the one that’s right for them.”
