What to Expect During a Mammogram

October 8, 2026

If you're preparing for your first mammogram, it's natural to have questions about what the experience will be like. The good news is that a mammogram is a quick screening that typically takes about 20 minutes and plays an important role in the early detection of breast cancer. Knowing what to expect can help you feel more comfortable and confident on the day of your appointment.

Before Your Exam
When you arrive for your mammogram, you'll be given a hospital gown or a front-opening drape and asked to remove jewelry and clothing above the waist. Wearing a two-piece outfit can make changing easier and help simplify the process.

During the Screening
A mammography technologist will guide you through the exam and help position each breast on the mammography machine. The goal is to capture clear, high-quality images that can help radiologists identify any areas of concern.

To obtain the best possible images, your breast will be gently compressed between two plates for a few seconds while X-rays are taken. While some women experience temporary discomfort during compression, many find the exam painless.

Why Is Compression Necessary?
Breast compression is an important part of mammography because it:

  • Uses a lower dose of X-ray radiation

  • Creates sharper, more detailed images

  • Reduces blurring caused by movement

  • Spreads out breast tissue so all areas can be viewed more clearly

  • Makes it easier to identify small abnormalities that could otherwise be hidden

Although compression can feel uncomfortable, it only lasts a few moments and helps ensure the most accurate results.

Taking the Images
You'll be asked to hold still while images are taken. The technologist may guide you through slight position changes to capture different views of the breast tissue. Most mammograms include top-to-bottom and side-view images.

This process is repeated for both breasts to provide a complete screening.

After Your Mammogram
Once the imaging is complete, your appointment is finished. In most cases, the entire exam takes about 20 minutes from start to finish.

Regular mammograms are one of the most effective tools for detecting breast cancer early, when treatment is often most successful. If you're due for a screening, talk with your provider about scheduling your mammogram and taking an important step toward protecting your health.
