Numbness, tingling or pain in your hands and wrists may seem like a minor annoyance at first, but these symptoms can interfere with sleep, daily activities and the hobbies you love.
Fortunately, effective treatments are available, often starting with simple, non-surgical options.
According to Michael Potter, M.D., a sports medicine physician at Providence Medford Medical Center, carpal tunnel syndrome occurs when the median nerve becomes compressed as it travels through a narrow passageway in the wrist called the carpal tunnel.
“Carpal tunnel syndrome typically starts as numbness and tingling that people may wake up with at night,” Dr. Potter says. “And they shake their hand to relieve the numbness and tingling, and then they’re fine.”

Treatment typically starts with a wrist brace worn at night to reduce pressure on the nerve. If symptoms persist, injections may help reduce inflammation. For more severe cases, a minimally invasive procedure or surgery can relieve pressure on the nerve and help restore function.
With the right treatment plan, many people can return to their daily routines with less pain and better hand function.
