SANTA MONICA, July 29, 2025 — Providence Saint John's Health Center has achieved a significant milestone, becoming the first hospital within the Providence system to receive the American Heart Association's Get With The Guidelines®– Coronary Artery Disease STEMI Receiving Silver with Target: Type 2 Diabetes award. This honor highlights Providence Saint John's unwavering commitment to delivering rapid, research-based care to people experiencing a specific type of heart attack known as an ST elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI), which is more severe and dangerous than other types of heart attacks.
The STEMI Receiving Center award is earned by hospitals that demonstrate a commitment to treating patients according to the most up-to-date research-based guidelines for STEMI care as outlined by the American Heart Association. By being the inaugural recipient of this award for Providence Saint John's sets a new benchmark for quality cardiac care in California.
“Saint John's is dedicated to improving the quality of cardiac care and the American Heart Association's Get With The Guidelines program helps us achieve that goal,” said Emily Enos, Providence Saint John’s Heart & Vascular Institute Executive Director. “The program puts proven knowledge and guidelines to work on a daily basis to improve patient longevity and quality of life."
Heart disease and stroke are the No. 1 and No. 5 causes of death in the United States, according to the American Heart Association 2025 Statistical Update. Each year, more than one million cases of acute coronary syndrome (ACS) require hospitalization in the U.S., and about 30 percent of ACS cases are classified as STEMI, caused by a complete blockage in a coronary artery. Studies show patients can recover better when providers consistently follow treatment guidelines.
“These awards show Saint John's commitment to caring for those in their community who need cardiovascular care,” said Donald Lloyd-Jones, past volunteer president of the American Heart Association and current volunteer chair of the Association’s Quality Oversight Committee. “By following the American Heart Association’s quality improvement protocols, Saint John’s can help realize our shared vision of improved patient outcomes, fewer readmissions and lower mortality rates — a win for health care systems, families and communities.”
