Notice to community: Acute Rehabilitation Unit closing November 18 at St. Joseph Hospital

September 11, 2024 Providence News Team

NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN of the closure of the Acute Rehabilitation Unit at the General Hospital Campus of Providence St. Joseph Hospital in Eureka (SJE).

Providence will be collaborating with Rockport’s Granada Rehabilitation and Wellness Center in Eureka to deliver rehabilitation services in Humboldt County starting on November 18.

Due to the state’s mandated seismic (earthquake) structural standards, the General Hospital campus will no longer be able to provide inpatient services after 2024. It was our plan to move the ARU to a new building at Redwood Memorial Hospital. Construction began in 2018 but due to various external factors, the project is no longer feasible.

The ARU service line was operated as a ten (10) bed unit but was licensed for fifteen (15) beds. Those beds will no longer be available.

As with any change in services at our hospitals, our caregivers are our priority. We are working with their unions as required by current contracts and are committed to a smooth transition for all our impacted caregivers.

With this change of services, SJE will collaborate with the other organizations in the community and at the following locations for care continuity:

•    Rockport Granada Rehabilitation and Wellness Center, in Eureka- a skilled nursing facility that offers long-term care, occupational therapy, physical therapy, speech therapy and other rehabilitation services. This facility does serve Medi-Cal and Medicare patients.

•    Providence Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital Acute Rehabilitation Unit-a general acute care hospital with an inpatient Acute Rehabilitation Unit. This facility does serve Medi-Cal and Medicare patients.

•    Providence Queen of the Valley Medical Center Acute Rehabilitation- a general acute care hospital with an inpatient Acute Rehabilitation Unit. This facility does serve Medi-Cal and Medicare patients.
