Redwood Memorial Hospital will break ground on a brand new 12,000 square foot Acute Inpatient Rehabilitation Addition in Fortuna on Tuesday, March 27th. The ground breaking ceremony will feature leadership from Redwood Memorial Hospital, St. Joseph Health, Humboldt County, the city of Fortuna and surrounding communities.

The addition is part of St. Joseph Health, Humboldt County’s long term strategy to invest capital in new infrastructure and to move current programs and services from existing infrastructure that do not meet the state of California new seismic compliance standards. Currently, the Acute Inpatient Rehabilitation Program is located at the General Hospital Campus in Eureka, and as of January 1, 2020, it will no longer be able to have any acute care services as the building doesn’t meet the new seismic standards.

The new addition will allow St. Joseph Health, Humboldt County to continue to provide holistic patient-centered care in Humboldt County. The single story addition will provide 10 new private patient rooms, a 700 square foot physical therapy gym, as well as occupational therapy and speech pathology spaces. Patients and staff will be surrounded by an environment that will nurture the sole and heal the body. Windows have been placed throughout the new addition to increase patient and staff connection to the outdoors and to amplify the healing effects of nature.

Since its inception in 1987, the Acute Inpatient Rehabilitation Program has cared for almost 10,000 patients from across Humboldt County and beyond, consistently ranking in the top percentile in the nation for patient outcomes, including patient length of stay, percent of patients able to go home, and high level of function at discharge. The program ranks in the top 1% of the nation for patient satisfaction. Under the guidance of Medical Director, Jim Peaker, Inpatient Rehabilitation has developed a model of excellence that is replicated throughout other hospitals at St. Joseph Health.

“Our rehab unit consistently ranks at the very top of similar programs across the nation,” says Peaker. “We have introduced and integrated key rehab leadership roles for our entire health system to ensure best practices and perfect care remain the driving force of our program.”

Admission criteria into the Rehab Program requires patients who have a medical complexity which cannot be managed in a less intensive setting, i.e. skilled nursing facility or home health. Patients participate in over three hours of therapy a day, five days a week.
