Providence Little Company of Mary Medical Centers in San Pedro and Torrance earned ‘A’ grades from The Leapfrog Group, a nonprofit organization that rates the nation’s hospitals for quality and safety. The South Bay hospitals were honored for the eighth straight reporting period.

“The past 15 months have been extremely challenging, and yet, our commitment to safe, compassionate, quality care never wavered -- it is who we are and what we do even in the midst of being overwhelmed by patients and caregivers suffering from COVID-19,” said Garry Olney, chief executive of the Torrance and San Pedro hospitals.

“I am extremely proud of our Providence Little Company of Mary family of caregivers and physicians for their steadfast compassion in caring for all those we serve, and for their relentless, passionate commitment to safety and quality of care we provide to our patients each and every day. I think this A rating from the Leapfrog Group reflects just that.”

The independent Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade measures achievements in protecting patients from harm and in providing safer health care. The semi-annual survey measures achievements in protecting patients from errors, injuries, accidents, and infections. The Leapfrog Group is an independent national watchdog organization committed to health care quality and safety. The Leapfrog an “A,” “B,” “C,” “D,” or “F” grade to all general hospitals across the country.

“An ‘A’ safety grade is an elite designation that your community should be proud of,” said Leah Binder, president and CEO of The Leapfrog Group. “The past year has been extraordinarily difficult for hospitals, but Providence Little Company of Mary Medical Centers show us it is possible to keep a laser focus on patients and their safety, no matter what it takes.”

Developed under the guidance of a national Expert Panel, the Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade uses up to 27 measures of publicly available hospital safety data to assign grades to more than 2,700 U.S. acute-care hospitals twice per year. The Hospital Safety Grade’s methodology is peer-reviewed and fully transparent
