Understanding colorectal cancer risk

Feeling informed is one of the most powerful steps people can take for their health. Registered cancer dietitian Alyssa George shares what research shows about colorectal cancer risk — and how small, everyday choices can make a meaningful difference.

"The risk factors for colorectal cancer are physical inactivity, obesity, and then diets that are high in red and processed meats and high in alcohol intake," she says.

Foods that help protect colon health

One of the most effective ways to support colon health is by eating more fiber-rich foods. Diets higher in fiber are associated with a lower risk of colorectal cancer and support overall digestive health.

Whole grains such as barley, quinoa and whole oats are especially beneficial when chosen in place of processed white grains. Fruits and vegetables, beans and lentils, along with nuts and seeds, are also excellent fiber sources that nourish the gut and help the body function at its best.

Foods to limit

Red and processed meats are linked to increased colorectal cancer risk. This includes items such as deli meats, bacon and hot dogs.
