Journeys in bariatric surgery: Jessica’s story

My name is Jessica and this is my story.

I made the decision to have weight loss surgery at Providence Little Company of Mary to improve my overall health. I struggled for many years with diabetes, high blood pressure, and was diagnosed with thyroid cancer. I felt like I was dying taking so many pills.

My experience at Providence was wonderful. I felt prepared and educated on what to expect throughout the entire journey. The entire staff who cared for me was truly a gift, and I thank God for all of you.

Since having surgery:

  • My biggest success is getting to my goal weight and no longer having to take pills for diabetes.
  • My biggest challenge is to make sure I get in at least 30 minutes of physical activity daily.
  • My favorite go to healthy meal is frozen stir fry vegetables with any protein (chicken, meat, or eggs). It is easy and quick to prepare, and I can make many different versions of it.
  • I feel more in tune with my mind and body than ever before. I want to continue to live this healthy lifestyle so I can be there for my family.

My advice to anyone considering weight loss surgery is to try and educate yourself as much as possible on the good, the bad, and everything in between. Become a part of your local weight loss support group and listen to what they tell you -- not what everyone else says.
