At Providence St. Joseph Hospital Eureka, care doesn’t end when a patient leaves the hospital — it continues in the relationships, milestones and stories that follow. That spirit was on full display during the first annual NICU Reunion, a special event hosted by our Childbirth Center that brought families, caregivers and NICU graduates back together for a day filled with joy, reflection and connection.

Held on May 17, the event — aptly themed “Jungle to Joy” — transformed the hospital into a vibrant, family-friendly celebration. Former NICU patients and their families returned not just to revisit a place that once held uncertainty, but to celebrate how far they’ve come.
A Day of Celebration and Connection
From the moment families arrived, the event offered opportunities to relax, play and reconnect. Children and parents alike enjoyed a wide range of activities, including:
- Face painting by local artist Leslie Allen and art student volunteers
- A petting zoo and bounce house
- A bubble station and interactive games
- A build-your-own sundae bar
- A safari-themed photo station to capture lasting memories
Laughter and excitement filled the space, but beyond the festivities was something even more meaningful — the chance to reunite with the caregivers who walked alongside these families during one of the most critical times in their lives.
Reconnecting After the NICU Journey
For many families, the NICU experience is both challenging and deeply transformative. The reunion created a space for families to reconnect with the nurses, providers and volunteer baby cuddlers who played such an important role in their journey.
“These reunions give us an opportunity to celebrate our NICU graduates and their families while honoring the unique bonds created during their time in our care,” said Heather Davis, manager of the Providence St. Joseph Childbirth Center and NICU. “Seeing these children thriving and reconnecting with the caregivers who supported them is incredibly meaningful.”
The event offered a powerful reminder of the resilience of NICU families and the impact of compassionate, team-based care.
Stories of Strength and Gratitude
For parents, returning to the NICU in a joyful setting can be an emotional experience — one filled with gratitude and pride.
“Coming back and seeing the nurses who cared for our baby means everything to us,” shared NICU parent Anna Boston, who attended the reunion. “They were with us during one of the most challenging times in our lives, and now they get to see how far our child has come. It’s something we’ll never forget.”
Anna also reflected on how her experience shaped her future:
“Thank you so much for putting on such a wonderful and heartwarming event. We had such a great time, and we appreciate all you do,” she said. “I’m actually finishing my nursing pre-requisites and applying to the nursing program partially because of our NICU experience.”
Her story is a testament to the lasting impact of care, compassion and connection.
A Commitment That Extends Beyond the Hospital Stay
The NICU Reunion is more than a single event — it reflects Providence St. Joseph Hospital Eureka’s ongoing commitment to family-centered care. By creating opportunities for families to reconnect, celebrate and share their journeys, the Childbirth Center continues to build a strong, supportive community.
From the earliest days in the NICU to milestones years later, the care team remains invested in each child’s story.
Looking Ahead
The success of this inaugural event marks the beginning of a new tradition — one that will continue to celebrate the progress, resilience and strength of NICU graduates and their families for years to come.
As the “Jungle to Joy” theme suggests, the journey may begin in uncertainty, but it can grow into something full of hope, celebration and connection.
