As Family Medicine residents prepare to transition from residency training into medical practice, having opportunities to explore potential career paths and build professional connections can play a vital role in shaping their futures. Providence St. Joseph Hospital Eureka's Annual Humboldt Resident Job Fair was designed to do just that.
On Oct. 14, Providence St. Joseph Hospital Eureka welcomed Family Medicine residents and regional health care organizations for an afternoon focused on career exploration, networking and professional development. The annual event provided residents with valuable insight into a variety of practice settings, patient populations and employment opportunities available throughout Humboldt County and the surrounding region.
The afternoon began with faculty-led discussions on career planning, contract negotiations and important considerations when evaluating prospective employment opportunities. Residents received practical guidance on navigating the transition from residency to independent practice while reflecting on their personal and professional goals.
"This event gave us a unique opportunity to connect directly with organizations serving communities throughout our region," said Dr. Adams Bruce Al-Os, a second-year Family Medicine resident. "Hearing about different practice environments, organizational cultures and patient populations helped me better understand the many ways we can make a meaningful impact as physicians. It was inspiring to see so many organizations invested in supporting the next generation of providers."
Representatives from five healthcare organizations participated in this year's event, including K'ima:w Medical Center, Open Door Community Health Centers, Providence Physician Network, Southern Oregon Alliance of Physicians & Providers (SOAPP) and United Indian Health Services (UIHS).
Each organization shared information about its mission, care model, patient populations and employee benefits, while also highlighting the unique opportunities and rewards of serving its community. Residents were able to gain firsthand knowledge about the diverse healthcare needs across the region and the various ways physicians can contribute to improving access to care.
"The Humboldt Resident Job Fair is an important opportunity for residents to learn about the exceptional organizations serving our communities and the wide range of career paths available to them," said Tara Zettl-Groulx, provider recruitment specialist at Providence St. Joseph Hospital Eureka. "Bringing residents and health care leaders together helps foster meaningful connections that can strengthen our local workforce and ultimately improve access to care for patients throughout the region."
The event concluded with a networking session that allowed residents to visit organization booths, ask questions and build relationships with health care leaders and recruiters. These conversations provided valuable insight into potential career pathways while strengthening connections between future physicians and regional healthcare organizations.
Providence St. Joseph Hospital Eureka extends its sincere appreciation to all participating organizations for investing their time, expertise and mentorship in supporting resident physicians. Through partnerships like these, the Humboldt Resident Job Fair continues to create meaningful opportunities for residents while helping strengthen the future healthcare workforce serving communities throughout Northern California and Southern Oregon.

About Providence Family Residency Program
The Providence Family Resident Program is now in its seventh year and our program continues to grow as a vital part of our Mission and our commitment to expanding access to high‑quality care in Humboldt County.
Our residents play an essential role in caring for patients, supporting clinical teams and strengthening the future of healt care in our region. Their dedication is evident in every department they touch, and their presence enriches both our hospital and our community.
One of the most meaningful markers of the program’s success is that more than 40% of our residents choose to stay in Humboldt after completing their training. Their decision to continue serving here reflects not only their connection to the community, but also the supportive learning environment created by our faculty, preceptors and caregivers across the hospital.
