A Stroke Far From Home: Tony Hu’s Journey Back to Independence

October 6, 2026

A professor from Boston, Tony Hu was visiting family in Southern California for the holidays when an ordinary drive with his wife became a life-changing emergency. They were on their way to pick up his birthday cake when Tony suddenly felt dizzy and disoriented. His muscles grew heavy, his face became numb and he could barely lift his left arm. Recognizing the warning signs of a stroke, his wife immediately called an ambulance, which brought him to Providence St. Jude Medical Center.

When Tony arrived, he could barely move his toes or lift his left hand. The St. Jude Intensive Care Unit stabilized and monitored Tony closely after his stroke event. Far from home and facing an uncertain recovery, he moved from intensive care into St. Jude’s inpatient rehabilitation program – where the hard work started. Through daily physical, occupational and speech therapy, he worked to regain the abilities that shaped his independence, career and everyday life.

Each milestone brought Tony closer to the life waiting for him in Boston. He learned to operate a wheelchair, progressed to a walker, regained the ability to dress and bathe independently and began typing with his left hand again — an especially meaningful step for a professor eager to return to his work. His therapists developed a personalized therapy program centered on the activities that mattered most to him, incorporating spreadsheets, real-world multitasking exercises and even simulated airplane seating to help him rebuild skills and prepare for the journey home.

After a month of determined work, Tony was walking with a cane and rebuilding the confidence he needed to return home to his children, his career and the active life he knew. He credits his loved ones and the St. Jude care team’s skill, creativity and encouragement. “I could not have recovered the way I did without my family and the St. Jude team,” he said.
