Providence Tarzana Medical Center, now known as Providence Cedars-Sinai Tarzana Medical Center, was the only hospital in the San Fernando and Santa Clarita valleys awarded five stars recently by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, which rates hospitals to help guide Medicare patients to top quality care.

CMS calculates scores using metrics from seven categories -- mortality, safety of care, readmission, patient experience, effectiveness of care, timeliness of care and efficient use of medical imaging. Hospital scores represent average in the categories, weighted by the numbers of patients. Metrics were tallied for more than 4,000 hospitals.

Nationally, 407 hospitals received 5-star status, 21 of them in California. Just three Los Angeles County hospitals earned five stars and only one in Orange County, St. Jude Medical Center in Fullerton, also a member of the Providence organization.

The recognition places Providence Cedars-Sinai Tarzana Medical Center and St. Jude in the top 9% of hospitals nationwide.

“The CMS star-rating system is one of the most respected and comprehensive hospital quality comparisons in the nation,” said Dale Surowitz, Providence Tarzana chief executive. “It provides consumers with a simple means of comparing hospitals based on data we are required to report.

“I’m especially honored because our hospital is under a major construction process and our employees have risen to the challenges that presents and continue to ensure each and every patient receives the best possible care.”

The CMS star rating system measures the experiences Medicare beneficiaries have with their health plans and health care systems. CMS urges the public to go to the nearest hospital in an emergency but also to plan in advance the hospitals that best serve individuals’ needs.
