Medford, OR—Providence Medford Medical Center is golden in its treatment of heart and stroke patients. Its steadfast commitment to excellent care has earned national recognition.

The American Heart Association honored Providence Medford with its Mission Lifeline Gold Receiving Quality Achievement Award for continued success in applying evidence-based treatment guidelines to improve the quality of care and outcomes for heart attack patients.

Every year, more than 250,000 people experience the deadliest type of heart attack known, which causes a blockage of blood flow to the heart and requires timely treatment to prevent death. Providence Medford earned the award by meeting specific criteria and standards of performance for quick and appropriate treatment through emergency procedures to re-establish blood flow to blocked arteries in heart attack patients.

In addition, Providence Medford received the American Stroke Association 2019 Get With The Guidelines - Stroke Gold Plus Quality Achievement and Target Stroke Elite Plus Awards for ensuring that stroke patients receive treatment that meets national evidence-based standards and recommendations.

On average, someone in the U.S. suffers a stroke every 40 seconds and nearly 795,000 people suffer a new or recurrent stroke each year. Timely treatment is critical to saving brain function after a stroke.

Providence Medford Medical Center earned the Get With The Guidelines award by meeting specific quality achievement measures for the diagnosis and treatment of stroke patients. These measures include evaluation of the proper use of medications and other stroke treatments.

These and other treatments are aligned with the most up-to-date, evidence-based guidelines with the goal of speeding recovery and reducing death and disability for stroke patients. Before discharge, patients should receive education on managing their health and get a follow-up visit scheduled, as well as other care transition interventions.

Providence Medford also received the association’s Target: Stroke Elite award, which recognizes the emergency department’s hard work to reduce the time between the patient’s arrival at the hospital and treatment with the clot-dissolving tissue plasminogen activator, or tPA - the only drug approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to treat ischemic stroke.

“We are committed to our heart and stroke patients at Providence Medford, and constantly work at giving the best care possible,” said Josephine Jacavone, Providence Medford Medical Center clinical nurse specialist for the stroke and heart program. “We are honored to be recognized for our dedication and achievements by The American Heart Association and American Stroke Association.”

Providence Medford Medical Center is also certified by the Joint Commission as an Advanced Primary Stroke Center. The cardiac program is accredited by the American College of Cardiology as a Primary Percutaneous Coronary Intervention and Chest Pain Center, and accredited by the American Heart Association as a Heart Attack Receiving Center.
