Retirement can be an exciting milestone, but the transition isn't always as simple as leaving work behind. While many people may focus on financial planning, experts say preparing for the emotional and social changes of retirement is just as important.

Lindsay Moore, Ph.D., a clinical psychologist, encourages people to think ahead about how they'll stay engaged, maintain routines and find a sense of purpose.

“I think that a lot of people find a lot of identity and satisfaction in their job and the purpose that comes from that,” Lindsay says. “And so — when it's gone — people don't realize it, but they sometimes feel a bit lost.”

Whether it's volunteering, mentoring, pursuing a hobby or learning a new skill, meaningful activities can help create a rewarding next chapter.

Staying active and connected

Physical activity and social connections play an important role in healthy aging. Lindsay encourages older adults to adapt activities to their abilities and remain involved in their communities.

"Socialization is one of the underappreciated ways to stave off cognitive decline or health issues," she says.

"Continuing to engage in the world is one of the best things that people can do for their health as they get older."
