When words failed, Ashley's presence—holding her hand and simply being there—spoke volumes. She walked alongside the family through every step of their loss, creating keepsakes, offering comfort, and continuing support even after transfer. Her care did not end at discharge—it became a lasting relationship rooted in empathy and connection. Ashley's impact reaches far beyond clinical care, reminding us that true healing includes the heart. 2025 Values in Action Award Winners The Values in Action Award is the highest honor we give at Covenant Health. This annual recognition program celebrates caregivers who go above and beyond to model the five core values: Compassion, Dignity, Justice, Excellence, and Integrity. 1 Dennis Duriex, MD Covenant Medical Group Restoring Hope Through Connection Faced with a life-altering diagnosis, one patient felt overwhelmed and unable to process more bad news. Dr. Dennis Duriex recognized this and chose connection over clinical routine. He sat with the patient, listened deeply, and met her where she was—bringing light into a moment filled with fear. Through kindness, humor, and presence, he helped transform her outlook from despair to determination. By the end of their conversation, she was no longer overcome—she was ready to fight. Dr. Duriex's gift is not only in healing the body, but in restoring the human spirit. Miguel Alegre, RN Covenant Medical Center Compassion in Life's Most Sacred Moments In a patient's final days, Miguel Alegre created moments of dignity, connection and peace that will never be forgotten. After recognizing the deep love a husband had for his wife, Miguel gently invited him to help care for her— transforming helplessness into a meaningful act of love. When her condition suddenly declined, Miguel ensured her husband was called immediately, honoring his place in her final moments. After her passing, he remained present—offering quiet support as goodbye was said. These acts became sacred. Through compassion and presence, Miguel turned loss into a lasting memory of love and humanity. During a busy evening, she returned after hours to personally prepare meals for a patient in need—and additional ones for others who might arrive. Her care didn't stop there. In a family's most difficult moments, she quietly provided comfort through simple, thoughtful gestures— offering nourishment and support without being asked. Mireya's actions reflect a powerful truth: healing often begins with being seen, cared for, and supported in the smallest ways. Tony Johnson, EMT Covenant Health System Comforting in Moments of Fear Known as "Pops," Tony Johnson has a gift for bringing calm and comfort to even the hardest situations. During the transport of a young child recovering from a traumatic injury, his gentle presence helped ease fear and create trust.
