WE ACT: AGRICULTURE AND FOOD
Sourcing food locally supports
our community
Beef is Montana's top
agricultural commodity
and an important part of
the state's economy. Until
recently, however, the
beef served in Providence
St. Patrick Hospital's
cafeteria came from
elsewhere. That changed
in 2024, when Providence
partnered with its national food service vendor on several initiatives to
provide more local and sustainable food at Providence hospitals.
Now, the Missoula hospital sources 80 pounds of Montana beef per
week through a local grower's cooperative. The co-op provides meat
from hundreds of mostly privately owned Montana ranches that
prioritize animal health and well-being. Enjoying a burger in Providence
St. Patrick's cafeteria now contributes to the strength of the local
agricultural community and food system.
+ More than 4,000 pounds of local burgers served in the cafeteria
in 2024.
