Retrofitting lighting reduces
energy use, emissions and costs
In 2024, Providence St. Joseph Hospital
Orange launched an LED lighting retrofit
aimed at cutting energy use, carbon
emissions and costs. By switching to
efficient, mercury-free LEDs, the hospital
projects it will save nearly 600 metric
tons of CO2 equivalents (MTCO2e) and
nearly $450,000 annually. In addition, the
upgrade is expected to prevent about
200 lighting outages per year, reduce
operational disruptions, and improve
lighting quality for caregivers and patients.
All 12,414 fixtures replaced at the hospital
are being recycled.
Following this success, retrofits are now approved for all of Providence's
sites, with similar savings expected in energy use, material costs and
disposal expenses.
+ Annual reductions of more than 3,783 MTCO2e – equivalent to
10 million miles driven
+ More than $3.8 million saved
