PROVIDENCE | ESG REPORT | 12 WE ACT: CHEMICALS Reducing exposure to chemicals of concern is crucial for protecting our patients, our caregivers and the environment. At Providence, we are dedicated to identifying the presence of these chemicals in our services, to implementing safety measures, and to replacing chemicals of concern whenever possible. Our Environmentally Preferred Purchasing Policy helps us make informed decisions when considering new products. Reducing emissions In 2023, Providence ministries continued to reduce carbon emissions from volatile anesthetic agents. Our goals are to remove desflurane from our formulary, to improve efficient use of other anesthetic agents, and to deactivate all piped nitrous oxide supply systems by the end of 2024. In 2023, we cut yearly greenhouse gas emissions from anesthesia by 73.6%, resulting in $2.2 million in annual savings. A toolkit for change Our Nitrous Oxide Toolkit, introduced in 2023, is guiding our systemwide transition to a portable nitrous oxide supply. We've made the toolkit available to other health systems to encourage and support engagement in this shared responsibility.
