PROVIDENCE | ESG REPORT | 13 WE ACT: TRANSPORTATION Transportation accounts for 28% of all greenhouse gas emissions in the U.S. — more than any other sector. We are working with our caregivers and partners on multiple fronts to reduce the emissions generated throughout the process of providing health care. Providence is reducing transportation emissions by: + Reducing single-occupancy vehicle transit by encouraging mass transit use + Eliminating unnecessary business travel + Installing EV charging for fleet vehicles, caregivers and visitors + Transitioning 50% of our fleet to hybrid or electric vehicles (in 2023, 10% of our newly purchased or leased vehicles were EVs or hybrids) Making freight transportation more sustainable Within the transportation sector, heavy-duty trucks are the fastest-growing contributor to air pollution. In 2023, 10 of Providence's 18 largest manufacturing and distribution suppliers participated in the EPA SmartWay program. By measuring, benchmarking and assessing their freight activities, these shipping partners are making better, more strategic choices that reduce their emissions and environmental impact. INTRODUCTION ENVIRONMENTAL SOCIAL GOVERNANCE ABOUT US A biannual caregiver survey helps calculate emissions from employee commuting, which we factor into our total annual greenhouse gas emissions.
