Sacred Symbols at both Ministries
Water represents life, cleansing and healing. At the entrance
to both the San Pedro and Torrance ministries, the sound from
the water features nur tures and provides a sense of tranquility,
thus quieting the sounds of ever yday activity. The circle and
inter woven pattern at the meditation seat symbolizes the
continuity of life. Statues of Venerable Mar y Potter and Blessed
Emilie Gamelin were also placed to remind us of the lives of the
founding communities of Sisters.
The Torrance entrance was designed with biblical references.
The three palm trees at the roundabout in front of the ministr y
represent the three wise men, and the twelve palm trees around
the Chapel represent the Twelve Tribes of Israel. The twelve
olive trees on the bank symbolize the Twelve disciples of Jesus.
The single olive tree in the planter represents Christ in the boat
on the Sea of Galilee. Both ministries have an abundance of
Olive trees on campus.
The plants in the landscape evoke, through cultural
iconography, a sense of oasis, historical, and biblical reference.
The date palms bring to remembrance the sweet flavor of dates
and that these palm trees typically surround an oasis, a place of
nur turing rest. The palm tree also represents sur vival. The olive
trees are a symbol of healing.
