It honors and celebrates those, who not only per form with distinction in their roles, but those who consistently go above and beyond in exemplifying our Mission and each of our Core Values of Compassion, Dignity, Justice, Excellence, and Integrity. This year, 40 of our caregivers were nominated between our South Bay ministries. The 10 caregivers (pictured to the right) were selected by a committee of their peers to receive the special award and were presented with a silver VIA pin, a cer tificate, and a special plaque – using beautiful watercolors to highlight our core values – at a special ceremony hosted by Kevin Manemann, Chief Executive Southern California Region, on March 31, 2022. In addition to the local ministries and region selecting and honoring our Values in Action awardees, each year the Providence Health System also selects 18 local and regional nominees to receive special recognition by the entire system. The Southern California Region provided two caregivers for consideration of this honor and we are proud to announce that Martha Rios, RN, in our San Pedro ministry was selected to receive the prestigious system award. Out of 7,000 nominations across the entire Providence St. Joseph Health System, Mar tha was one of only 18 caregivers selected to be recognized by the health system. Below is what a caregiver wrote about Mar tha when submitting her name for the award. Martha respects the inherent dignity of all our patients no matter their background. On one occasion Martha took the extra time to ensure that a homeless patient received a bath, combed through his matted hair, and gave him a shave. Although the patient was resistant to this care, she persevered to ensure that by the end of her shift her patient was clean. Prior to the patient being discharged, he let the charge nurse know that he appreciated being treated "like a human" and apologized to any of the nursing staff he may have been rude towards. While he did not remember Martha's name, he called her his "angel ". 16 strENGtHEN tHE COrE
