10 Supporting our South Bay community Providence Little Company of Mary's Community Health Investment team is the face of our ministries in the South Bay community. Every year, Community Health Investment caregivers serve more than 30,000 individuals across the Los Angeles region through its wide array of programming. When children are healthy they are ready to learn, and families thrive. Most caregivers who have been with Providence Little Company of Mar y long enough are familiar with our Partners For Healthy Kids Mobile Clinic. The clinic, which has travelled to local schools since 1994, is a long- time fixture in the community and is just one of several programs that our Community Health Investment team has created to reduce health disparities and improve health outcomes among low-income and underserved communities in our service area. Partners For Healthy Kids was originally launched in San Pedro and Wilmington to provide primar y care for uninsured children at school sites. This minimized the amount of time a child had to be out of the classroom and was a convenient and accessible option for families. As children became eligible for health care under Medi-Cal and Covered CA, clinic staff assisted with enrolling them into eligible health care plans and linked these families with clinics within their community that would function as their medical home. At that point, Partners For Healthy Kids shifted to providing needed immunizations for children entering school, flu vaccine clinics, and sports physicals, by request. The clinic's ability to adapt to the community 's needs over the past 27 years led to another shift in services in 2020, when the clinic pivoted its services in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic. Partners For Healthy Kids caregivers utilized the same model previously used for flu vaccine clinics to launch weekly COVID-19 clinics in communities disproportionately affected by COVID-19, including Wilmington, San Pedro, and Hawthorne, which had some of the highest positivity rates in the County. The Clinics are held at Providence's Wellness and Activity Center in Wilmington, as well as on the site of schools, community-based organizations, and in partnership with local cities. Since Community Health Investment began the COVID-19 vaccine clinics in Januar y, 2021, 5,113 people have received a vaccine and 6,755 vaccines have been given in the South Bay (as of August 20, 2021). The services offered by the COVID-19 vaccine clinics are complemented by a robust in-person and social media campaign using Community Health Workers to reach these same communities (funded by a grant from the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health). These neighborhoods have long been identified by our ministr y 's triennial Community Health Needs Assessment as having worse health outcomes as compared to more affluent communities in our service area. The disparities in COVID-19 cases and vaccinations in these cities further demonstrated how income, education, and access to health care impact health outcomes. Providence Community Health Workers are deployed to schools, churches, stores, and community events to educate the public on how to prevent COVID-19 infections, what to do if they or their family member is infected, and continue to be a trusted resource for information about the vaccine.
