Food Distribution in Wilmington
In March we temporarily closed our Wilmington Certified Farmers' Market in response to
the COVID-19 pandemic. This left many of the families we serve with less access to fresh,
affordable produce and left our farmers with one less place to sell their products. Through
funding from the Best Start Wilmington project, Harbor Community Benefit Foundation,
Albertsons Companies Foundation, Raskob Foundation, and Emergency Food and Shelter
Program we started a weekly drive-through food distribution program at our Community
Health and Wellness Activity Center that lasted 13 weeks. Approximately 1,870 families
in need received 30 pounds of produce and eggs for free, purchased from our farming
partners at RC Farms, Castellanos Farms, and Gama Farms. For Providence Little Company
of Mar y Community Health, this project was much more than just handing out food. The food
distribution program reaffirmed our commitment to supporting the community in times of
need and was one way of easing the burden faced by these families.
We will be our communities' health partner,
aiming for physical, spiritual and emotional
well-being. We seek to ease the way of our
neighbors in their journey to good life.
