Honoring the spirit Spiritual and dream experiences As your loved one moves closer to death, they may begin to alternate between the physical and nonphysical realms. It is not unusual for the person to speak symbolically about their death, asking for help to "pack my bags" or "go home." Dreams of embarking on a journey are also common. Your loved one may talk to people whom we cannot physically see. Often this is a family member or friend who has died. Sometimes the person will report seeing the place to which they will travel after death. These experiences prepare a person for death and are a normal, natural part of the dying process. For the caregiver, this is an indication that your loved one is in the final days of their life. Encourage your loved one to talk about what they are experiencing. Be open to what they are sharing. Do not try to talk them out of their experience. If your loved one is frightened, offer comfort. 8
