PROVIDENCE | ESG REPORT | 25 INTRODUCTION ENVIRONMENTAL SOCIAL GOVERNANCE ABOUT US PATIENT SAFETY AND QUALITY OF CARE 73% of patients with an ICU stay of 5+ days had a documented goals-of-care conversation in their chart in 2023. Our dedication to high-quality patient care is reflected in our quality control, assurance and continuous improvement. We strive to provide the best care to every person who enters our ministries, especially the poor and vulnerable. Goal-aligned, whole-person care. The Providence Institute of Human Caring has been a national leader in the advancement of goal- aligned, whole-person care, which recognizes that health and illness are fundamentally personal. Preventive and chronic disease care. With a focus on keeping patients and communities healthy and thriving, our improvement efforts in preventive care and chronic disease management have exceeded NCQA top-quartile performance in key areas, including breast and colon cancer screening and diabetes control. High reliability. Providence is committed to becoming a high reliability organization (HRO) that builds safe, durable systems for caregivers and patients alike. Early identification and treatment of sepsis. Our early-detection and treatment protocols improve outcomes for patients with sepsis, the leading cause of death in hospitals. Maternal health. The Providence Women & Children's Institute works to ensure the safety and well-being of both mothers and babies. Our efforts have resulted in improved maternal outcomes, nearly eliminating preventable maternal deaths. Age-friendly health systems. We partnered with the John A. Hartford Foundation and others to develop the Age-Friendly Health System framework, which addresses the needs of aging adults with evidence- based care that is free from harms and that aligns with what matters most to them and to their caregivers. Patient-reported outcomes. We gather patient-reported outcomes to gain unique and differentiated perspectives on the experience of care from our patients' point of view, with a goal of engaging and empowering our patients. Antibiotic stewardship. Providence follows programs aimed at optimizing the use of antibiotics, reducing unnecessary antibiotic prescribing and minimizing the risk of antibiotic resistance.
