Health Matters: Providence St. Joseph Hospital | 3 Kidney Transplant Program Celebrates 50th Anniversary This year, we celebrate the 50th anniversary of our Kidney Transplant Program. Since our program first launched, we have performed more than 1,230 kidney transplants. We recently celebrated this remarkable, lifesaving feat with a butterfly display on our lawn, featuring a butterfly for every transplant patient who has had their life transformed at St. Joseph Hospital. With the dedicated work of Yasir Qazi, MD, Robert Naraghi, MD, Ervin Ruzics, MD, and the team of nurses, dietitians, social workers, clinical program assistants and our quality coordinator, we expect to continue to grow and provide life-giving, life- enhancing opportunities to patients. Dr. John Maurice Performs 200th Ion Procedure Thoracic surgeon Dr. John Maurice, one of the most experienced physicians in the U.S. using the Ion robot, recently performed his 200th Ion procedure. The Ion system visualizes and executes precise, minimally invasive biopsies in some of the most hard-to-reach areas of the lung, where malignant cancers frequently begin. The best part is that this state- of-the-art technology can detect cancer sooner. When lung cancer is diagnosed at the earliest stage, the average 5-year survival rate is 92%. That's great news for our patients. America's 100 Best Hospitals for Patient Experience Providence St. Joseph Hospital is proud to be named one of America's 100 Best Hospitals for patient experience by the Women's Choice Award, America's trusted referral source for the best in health care. The award signifies that Providence St. Joseph has been ranked within the top 100 hospitals of similar size. We are also honored to be among the recipients of the 2023 Women's Choice Award for being one of America's Best Hospitals for bariatric surgery, comprehensive breast care, cancer care, heart care, mammogram imaging, minimally invasive surgery, obstetrics and women's services. Kolski, MD, director of Structural Heart Disease, recently co-authored an article on a cutting-edge CHEETAH trial conducted at Providence St. Joseph and published in the American Heart Association's high-impact journal, Circulation: Cardiovascular Interventions.
