Health Matters: Providence Mission Hospital | 7 B reast cancer screening can sometimes seem like another chore in a woman's busy life. But ask any woman whose mammograms have yielded evidence of cancer and they will tell you screening is easy and accurate and that early detection may save your life. Located within Mission Women's Wellness Center, the imaging center 's caring staff are available to serve you. We offer a complete range of breast diagnostic services in a serene environment, to help identify cancer earlier and optimize outcomes. Marla Anderson, MD, breast program director at Providence Mission Hospital Leonard Cancer Institute, describes the breast care we provide. Is a mammogram the same thing as breast cancer screening? Annual mammogram imaging for early detection of breast cancer should begin at age 40, or possibly sooner if you are determined to be at high risk for breast cancer. Some women at higher risk for breast cancer may benefit from supplemental imaging that includes breast ultrasound or breast MRI. Mission Imaging Center provides a complete range of screenings and diagnostic evaluations, including mammography, ultrasound, breast MRI and minimally invasive biopsy techniques. Mission's CARE program offers evaluation of your breast cancer risk at the time of your screening mammogram to help determine whether supplemental screening is appropriate. What is 3D mammography? We are proud to offer tomosynthesis, also known as 3D mammography, the most advanced form of mammography available. This type of mammography provides better imaging for dense breast tissue and results in fewer false positive results. This means that fewer women will be called back for additional imaging, reducing stress levels and saving time for women with a busy lifestyle. In addition, 3D mammography detects more breast cancers at an earlier stage than the traditional 2D mammography. Who reviews the results of my screening test? Specialized breast radiologists read and interpret the mammograms utilizing state-of-the-art computer-aided detection (CAD) to aid in the earliest possible detection of breast cancer. If you need follow-up exams or tests, such as breast MRI, ultrasound or biopsy, we provide all the services you will need in one convenient location. The breast specialists at the center are members of an extraordinary staff of clinicians and technologists who provide unmatched care and comfort, giving patients access to the latest technologies, newest treatment options and cutting- edge therapies. What happens if I have breast cancer? Most mammograms show no signs of cancer. However, if you are diagnosed with breast cancer, Providence Mission Hospital will guide you through the entire process of diagnosis, treatment and recovery. Mission received the prestigious NAPBC (National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers) accreditation, meeting 25 standards of care, so you can have absolute confidence that you are receiving comprehensive, compassionate and clinically superior care. What are some of the highlights of your breast care treatment program? In addition to the most advanced treatment, we offer: • Nurse navigators to guide patients through the continuum of care while providing emotional support, education and access to resources. • An advanced genetic counseling and testing program that empowers women with active prevention, intervention and risk-reduction strategies. For women identified as at risk of developing breast cancer, this program provides invaluable preventive information and resources. Our licensed genetics counselors will help you understand your risk and how to proactively manage your breast health. • A dedicated support team that includes your personal physicians, clinical nurse specialists, nurse navigators, social workers, dietitians and physical therapists. • Mission's weekly cancer conferences gather highly trained, multi-disciplinary clinicians to develop a complete picture of you and your specific circumstances while empowering doctors to provide optimal treatment recommendations. • An appearance center with products to promote comfort and healing for patients undergoing cancer treatment, including a hairstylist.
