6 Caregiver, Physician and Volunteer Spotlights Brian Fong, MD, has been an Emergency Medicine (ED) physician at Providence Little Company of Mar y (PLCM) Medical Center San Pedro since 1999. "As an ED physician, I diagnose and treat a wide range of diseases. When I initially started, the ED department had only seven beds. We are excited about the new ED expansion project that will allow us to serve more patients in the great San Pedro community. " Working at PLCM has been a nice contrast to the inner-city teaching hospital where I worked at for many years. I really fell in love with the small town feel of San Pedro. Working with our caregivers, physicians and community members feels like working with family because there is a great sense of camaraderie, teamwork, and friendship. "I've also enjoyed volunteering assistance with medical care in Peru, Guatemala, and Cambodia, including traveling to Mexico on a monthly basis to volunteer with the Flying Samaritans International since 2006. The one-day trips are planned and organized by undergraduates from UC Riverside and Cal State Fullerton. We provide primar y care to small border towns that have limited resources and no access to medical care. It is a great opportunity for continuing care, prevention, education, and mentoring aspiring health care professionals. If anyone has interest in attending a trip, it is a great introduction to international medicine." Physician Spotlight: Brian Fong, MD Providence Spotlights Jennifer Jarvis, RN has worked for 2 West at Providence Little Company of Mar y (PLCM) Medical Center San Pedro since 2008. "I chose to work at PLCM because I wanted to serve my local community. I also wanted to work for a hospital where the core values of respect, compassion, justice, excellence, and stewardship are those that I strive to achieve both personally and professionally in my ever yday life. While working here, I have developed strong bonds and treasured friendships with my fellow caregivers. I love the team atmosphere of 2 West and the great attention to the care to the patients we serve. San Pedro Caregiver Spotlight: Jennifer Jarvis, RN "One thing people may not know about me is that my 8-yr old son wants to become a doctor, so he can go to work with Mommy one day." Aviva Levin, Certified Chaplain has worked at Providence Little Company of Mar y (PLCM) Medical Center Torrance since 2021. "I chose to work at PLCM because of the Mission to serve the poor and vulnerable. Social justice, diversity, equity, and inclusion are central to my theology and my ministr y as a chaplain. PLCM provides an ideal framework for my voice and my heart. "I love coming to work and passing by the various water features and landscaping surrounding the hospital. The sounds of the water remind me to pause and be grateful for God 's gifts. The olive trees transport me to the roots of my faith in the MENA (Middle East and North Africa) region. As I enter the doors, the kindness, compassion, and dedication of our caregivers warms my soul and inspires me to provide the best care I can for those in transitional life moments. Torrance Caregiver Spotlight: Aviva Levin, Certified Chaplain "A fun fact about me: I supplemented my income after college by teaching ballroom dance for Arthur Murray…Cha! Cha! Cha!"
