3 Messages from Leadership This is an exciting time to be a part of healthcare. While we realize there are many challenges and changes due to COVID-19, healthcare reimbursement, and even within Providence's leadership structure, we persevere. We strive for excellence in patient care. That is evidenced in the awards and accolades we continue to achieve. It is also evidenced in the support our community continues to provide through the fundraising arm of our ministries, the Providence Little Company of Mary Foundation. The foundation has been extremely generous in helping to fund additional construction, such as the Emergency Department expansion at our San Pedro ministry, some of the crucial Shared Governance / Magnet work, and vital equipment such as automated CardioPulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) devices for both San Pedro and Torrance ministries. To address the nursing shortage, we continue to provide a sought-after Transition into Practice (TIPs) program that provides new nursing graduates the opportunity to ease their way into full-time practice and for experienced nurses, the opportunity to transition into a more specialized field of nursing, if desired. We rely heavily on our experienced nurses to provide the mentorship necessary to help these caregivers through this process and we are grateful for their participation. We have two councils recently starting, one at each ministry, consisting of front line nurses, with the purpose of creating a retention plan for our experienced nurses. We could not have managed through the past few years without the nursing strength that has been built within our ministries. I am hopeful we will see some activity in this important work over the next several months. In support of the recognition of our nurses, and to highlight the impact of nursing practice in our ministries, we have had several Daisy award recipients across San Pedro and Torrance. The nominations received from patients, families, and our own caregivers, are simply the most moving and beautiful articulations of nursing practice. We also continue to see our caregivers lifted up through the Values In Action program. This cross-section of nominated individuals from multiple departments highlights that it is a team that makes a difference for our patients each and every day. And, while each new day brings a new set of challenges, this team provides a level of compassion and expertise that makes a difference. Thank you for continuing our Mission of caring for the poor and vulnerable, striving for excellence, and your continued perseverance which makes us stronger as an organization. We cannot do this work without you and our community needs us more than ever. We have a community of caregivers within our Providence Little Company of Mary San Pedro and Torrance ministries that will continue to thrive in the care of our patients as did those who came before us. Please take care of yourselves and be proud of the work you have done and continue to do. I could not be more proud of you all. Scott Ciesielski Chief Nursing Officer, South Bay
