Safety and Security Updates
Please access the most recent version of the South Bay Active Shooter Master Plan
on Sharepoint for the latest updates to our proactive response .
We also consulted our local and regional Security and
Safety teams. We partnered with external agencies,
including the Torrance Police Department (TPD), the
Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and the Joint
Regional Intelligence Center (JRIC).
Here are some key actions we have taken over the last
few months:
• Our South Bay ministries were first in the SoCal
Region to host DHS for a comprehensive Vulnerability
Assessment. Our Facilities, Security, IT leaders and
Executive Director of Operations, met with a DHS
Protective Security Advisor to complete a 250-page
survey of each of our ministry 's infrastructure and
cybersecurity operations. A walking tour of the exterior
and interior was also conducted to further understand
and document our operations.
This effort provided us with "options for consideration"
to minimize our vulnerabilities and optimize the security
and safety of our caregivers and community.
• TPD provided Active Shooter Training for nearly 600
South Bay caregivers, which emphasized "Run, Hide,
Fight" in the event of an active shooter threat.
Safety tips and precautions, applicable for caregivers
while serving at the ministry and living their personal
lives, were shared and discussed.
• The JRIC completed an on-site Vulnerability
Assessment to help us learn where we have
opportunities to provide a safer environment in
Torrance.
The San Pedro Assessment is scheduled to occur
on September 21.
• As requested by caregivers, bullet-proof glass was
installed in both our Torrance and San Pedro
Emergency Department lobbies.
• Torrance and San Pedro security officers increased
the duration and frequency of both interior and exterior
rounding at each ministry. An additional security officer
is also posted at each main entrance for heightened
vigilance.
• Points of entry were reduced to the Main Entrance and
ED (only) at each ministry – a key strategy to reduce the
likelihood of entry by an unauthorized person.
• To ease the way of our physicians arriving late at night
to care for our OB and surgery patients, we added eight
physician-only parking spaces near the front of the
Torrance ministry. These spaces allow quick ministry
access, along a well-lit path, to our patients in need of
their care.
• Educational resources supporting dialog with children
about active shooter threats were provided to all
caregivers.
• Continued to provide and remind all caregivers that
they may request an escort to or from their car 24/7
by calling x37233 (Torrance) or x7233 (San Pedro).
While we continue to look for, and implement, ways
to increase your safety, please remember that we are
all a part of our security plan. It takes every one of us
to optimize the security and safety of our workplace.
Remember to close propped doors, report any
suspicious activity to security and be aware of your
surroundings at all times.
