2018 Philanthropic Impact Report

February 19, 2019

Thanks to your partnership, a remarkable $7.6 million was donated to St. Jude in the 2018 year. Here are just a few examples of the extraordinary care that you made possible in 2018:

1. You took us a huge leap forward in breast imaging capabilities by supporting our journey to bring the latest and most exciting advancement in breast cancer detection—3D mammography—to St. Jude. Over 1,500 donors helped fund the first 2 of 6 needed systems, and continued support toward our $4.1 million goal will ensure every mammogram screening can be performed with this lifesaving technology.

2. Donors with an eye toward the future secured the sustainability of life-changing programs by establishing our first-ever endowments in the areas of palliative care and nursing education.

3. Patients of St. Jude Heritage Medical Group are benefitting from new cutting-edge gastrointestinal (GI) technology thanks to a grateful patient who made a donation to help purchase FibroScan, a specialized ultrasound machine for the liver, and SmartPill™, a motility capsule which travels through the GI tract to provide physicians with valuable diagnostic information.

4. Dozens of St. Jude nurses advanced their degrees or achieved specialized certifications as a direct results your generosity and support of nursing scholarships and educational opportunities.

5. A generous philanthropist helped St. Jude acquire life-changing rehabilitation technology, a “wearable robot” called Indego®. The futuristic-looking exoskeleton allows gait-impaired individuals to stand up and walk again thanks to powered hip and knee joints in conjunction with sensor technology and sophisticated control strategies.

6. You contributed more than $300,000 last year toward our Care for the Poor programs, which increased access to health care and wellness services for underserved residents in our community.

7. Seventy women were able to celebrate, emotionally heal and connect with other breast cancer survivors at the philanthropy-supported Untie Your Ribbon Retreat.

8. Neurosurgery patients will now benefit from just millimeter-wide incisions, less scarring and shorter hospital stays thanks to new donor-funded Visualase™, an MRI-guided, minimally invasive laser ablation system that utilizes the smallest laser catheter on the market.

93,000:
Total number of hours contributed by St. Jude volunteers, who range from 18 to 93 years old.

SONIFI: New video technology, made possibly by donors, provides patients with in-room disease and medication management education, entertainment and healthy living information.

LuxOR® LX3: Ophthalmic surgical microscopes, made possible by philanthropy, gifted our surgeons with improved visualization during cataract, corneal or glaucoma procedures — leading to optimal outcomes in sharpening patients’ vision or correcting their astigmatism.

6x: How many times faster a physician can now respond to patient care needs using philanthropy-funded PerfectServe, a secure integrated communications platform that connects clinicians using voice, email and text across the care continuum.
